Another winter storm is forecast to bring light to moderate snowfall to parts of the Staunton District on Monday morning, with snow beginning around sunrise and possibly lasting into early afternoon. The highest snow accumulations are expected from Harrisonburg southward and in higher elevations within Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, and Highland counties.

Motorists are advised to monitor their travel routes using 511 Virginia before heading out, as snowfall amounts will vary across the region. Drivers should be particularly cautious on bridges and overpasses since these surfaces tend to freeze first.

“VDOT advises motorists to postpone travel if possible until temperatures rise and conditions improve on Friday afternoon. Roads may become slick again Friday evening into Saturday morning as temperatures drop into the 20s.”

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Staunton District will deploy plows and treat roads as necessary throughout the affected areas. Their priority is clearing interstate highways first, followed by primary roads numbered 1 through 599, then major secondary roads with key infrastructure or high traffic volumes. Other secondary roads and subdivision streets will be addressed once higher-priority routes are completed and resources permit.

Travelers can access updated road conditions by dialing 511, visiting the 511 Virginia website, or using its mobile app. The service provides a color-coded map along with county-by-county text listings that define road conditions as minor (bare pavement except for isolated spots), moderate (snow or ice on major portions), severe (drifting or partially blocked), or closed (road inaccessible).

VDOT’s Customer Service Center operates around the clock for users needing to report hazards, request services, or obtain transportation information at 800-367-7623 or via its mobile-friendly website.

The Staunton District covers Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties. Updates are also available through social media channels such as Facebook and X.
