Highway maintenance and construction activities are scheduled to impact travel across the Staunton District from September 15 to 19, 2025. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released a detailed list of ongoing and upcoming roadwork in its district, which covers eleven counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.
The planned work includes lane closures, shoulder closures, flagger-controlled operations, bridge repairs, sign installations, environmental assessments, mowing operations, and utility work. Projects will take place on primary and secondary roads as well as interstate highways including I-64, I-66, and I-81.
Motorists are advised that schedules may change due to weather or material availability. VDOT reminds drivers to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations and to remain alert for changing traffic patterns and lane restrictions within work zones.
In Alleghany County, right shoulder closures are planned on Interstate 64 between mile markers 35 and 37 for sign work from Monday through Friday. On Route 42 near Morgan Drive, single-lane traffic will continue around-the-clock for bridge maintenance until the end of September. Wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited in this area.
Rockbridge County will see new right shoulder closures for sign work on I-64 between mile markers 53 and 55. Ramp narrowing is expected at Exit 175 northbound on I-81 for pavement repairs early in the week. Other projects include overnight paving operations on southbound I-81 between mile markers 188 and 180 through October 10.
In Augusta County, there will be right shoulder closures along the westbound off-ramp at Exit 91 on I-64 for sign installation. Overnight single-lane closures are also scheduled for bridge inspection between mile markers 94 and 97 eastbound and westbound on Sunday night.
The widening of I-81 continues with ongoing lane reductions between mile markers 221 to 227 northbound and southbound; these restrictions will last into spring of 2026 with a reduced speed limit of sixty miles per hour. Construction also continues on truck-climbing lanes between mile markers 234 to 237 in Augusta County and mile markers 237 to 238 in Rockingham County.
Road users in Rockingham County should note various full road closures for bridge replacements—such as Route 620 over Mountain Run through September—and paving operations requiring detours or alternate routes.
Work zones with single-lane or shoulder closures are active throughout Frederick County along portions of Interstate 81 due to cable-barrier installation and tree removal. In Warren County, overnight paving continues on sections of both Interstate highways as part of the larger I-81 widening project set for completion by November.
Vegetation management may occur across multiple routes district-wide during this period. VDOT urges motorists to use caution when traveling through any work zone.
