Highway maintenance and construction work will take place across the Staunton District from August 11 to 15, 2025. The district includes Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties.
Work schedules may change depending on weather and material availability. Drivers are advised to be cautious of slow-moving equipment during mowing and should stay alert for changes in traffic patterns or lane closures in work zones.
In Alleghany County, flagger traffic control is scheduled on Route 18 for bridge inspection over Potts Creek Monday morning. Overnight closures continue on Route 42 near Morgan Drive for railway bridge maintenance through mid-September with a detour in place. Other primary and secondary roads will see routine maintenance including tree removal and pothole repairs.
Bath County will have bridge inspections on Route 39 at multiple locations Tuesday and Wednesday. Routine shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning are also planned.
Rockbridge County’s Interstate 64 eastbound will have right shoulder closures for repairs Monday through Thursday. On Interstate 81 between mile markers 188-197, overnight single lane closures will occur for paving operations until September 4. Various utility and fiber installation projects are ongoing on primary routes.
In Highland County, Route 220 will undergo milling and paving near the Bath County line through September 1 with flagger control in place. Additional roadwork includes pothole patching and brush cutting.
Augusta County’s I-64 westbound between mile markers 97-87 will see overnight lane closures Friday and Saturday nights for pavement marking. Several sections of I-81 northbound and southbound have single lane or shoulder closures due to paving operations or construction projects extending into late fall or beyond.
Rockingham County continues work on I-81 truck-climbing lanes between mile markers 237-238 with left shoulder closures at all times. Additional overnight single lane closures are planned at several other points along the interstate for bridge maintenance or inspections.
Routine mowing operations continue throughout Page County’s primary roads while similar activities plus pipe cleaning are scheduled on secondary roads.
Shenandoah County’s I-81 corridor has various overnight single-lane or left shoulder closures related to bridge work or widening projects through early September. Tree removal operations are scheduled along Route 11 during daytime hours this week.
Frederick County plans grading and bridge work along I-81 southbound as well as overnight bridge work northbound next week. Lane restrictions for tree trimming are set on Route 50 (Northwestern Pike) from August 13–20.
Clarke County will conduct a new round of eastbound right lane/shoulder closures Saturday (August 9) on Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) for bridge inspection while other repaving continues elsewhere along the route at night.
Warren County has several ongoing I-66 shoulder closure projects tied to nearby widening efforts as well as new utility-related work between mile markers 15–14 westbound through Tuesday. Bridge painting continues near mile marker 11–12 eastbound/westbound until August’s end.
VDOT reminds motorists that vegetation management may occur throughout the district on various routes and urges caution when driving through any active work zone.
