The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced upcoming highway work that may affect traffic across the Staunton District from November 3 to November 7, 2025. The district covers 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.
VDOT cautions that scheduled work is subject to change depending on weather and material availability. Drivers are urged to use caution when traveling through work zones and remain alert for changing traffic patterns and lane closures.
In Alleghany County, new right shoulder closures for brush cutting will occur on Interstate 64 eastbound between mile markers 0 and 41 on Monday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Overnight single lane closures for bridge inspections are planned between mile markers 16 and 18, both directions, from Monday through Wednesday nights. Bridge maintenance with right lane closures continues at mile markers 24 to 26 until November 15.
Primary roadwork in Alleghany includes ongoing single-lane traffic near Route 636 for bridge maintenance on Route 42, with temporary signals controlling traffic around the clock; wide-load tractor trailers remain prohibited. On Route 154 in Covington, overnight right lane and shoulder closures are scheduled for bridge inspection early in the week.
Bath County will see flagger-controlled repairs on various primary and secondary roads during weekdays for pipe cleaning, brush cutting, and shoulder repairs.
In Rockbridge County, sign work will require right shoulder closures westbound on I-64 between mile markers 54 and 55 throughout the week. Eastbound brush cutting is set between mile markers 41 and 57 on Thursday. Several sections of I-81 northbound and southbound will experience overnight single lane closures for bridge inspections.
Augusta County’s major projects include sign work at Exit 99 on I-64 starting Monday through Friday, along with installation of traffic sensors northbound on I-81 between mile markers 204 to 208 during overnight hours early in the week. Ongoing widening projects continue along stretches of I-81 with reduced speed limits in effect as part of construction efforts expected to last into spring or later years.
Rockingham County’s portion of I-81 remains active with alternating lane closures associated with truck-climbing lanes construction near mile markers 237–238, as well as additional sign work extending northward. Work related to Route 33 bridge replacements continues with periodic single-lane restrictions expected through September 2026.
Page County crews will be working along Route 340 for utility-related flagging operations while secondary roads receive attention for brush cutting and pipe cleaning during weekdays.
Shenandoah County’s section of I-81 is impacted by alternating shoulder closures linked to a southbound widening project near exit 294–299 until January 8. Controlled blasting activities are planned midweek between exits 296–298 but will pause during Election Day, Veterans Day, or Thanksgiving week.
Frederick County motorists can expect ongoing left lane overnight closures for cable-barrier installation along I-81 until year-end; sign work is scheduled northbound from mile marker 313–321 throughout the week. Bridge painting affects portions of Routes 7 and 11.
Clarke County’s updates include continued alternating overnight lane closures on Route 340 due to bridge joint repairs running through late November.
Warren County lists new right shoulder closure projects along Interstate 66 at multiple locations this week plus further maintenance activity impacting both Interstates 66 and 81.
