The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its latest schedule of roadwork and traffic impacts for the Staunton District, covering January 12 to 16, 2026. The district includes 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.
Planned work includes lane closures, shoulder closures, and flagger-controlled traffic on interstates, primary roads, and secondary roads across multiple counties. These activities are subject to change depending on weather conditions and material availability.
In Alleghany County, Interstate 64 will see right shoulder closures between mile markers 15 to 20 for sign work from Monday through Friday. Temporary closures with law enforcement control are scheduled between mile markers 23 to 29 for overhead utility work on Sunday morning. Mobile right shoulder closures for tree trimming will occur westbound from mile marker 41 to 31 midweek.
Bath County will have shoulder closures on Route 39/42 near Ridge Road and Route 220 near Redemption Road for sign installation throughout the week. Various maintenance activities such as brush cutting and pipe cleaning are also planned.
Rockbridge County’s Interstate corridors include mobile right shoulder closures for tree trimming on I-64 westbound early in the week. On I-81 southbound at Exit 180, there will be ramp narrowing Thursday for bridge inspection over Route 11. Multiple locations along Route 11 (Lee Highway) will have lane or shoulder restrictions due to sign work or bridge inspections.
Highland County continues a long-term project with a temporary signal operating on Route 220 for Strait Creek bridge replacement until August 2027.
Augusta County’s I-81 widening project results in single-lane traffic at exit ramps and continuous shoulder closures through spring. Work zone speed limits remain at 60 miles per hour in affected areas. Additional utility work is scheduled along several segments of Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway).
Rockingham County’s portion of I-81 sees ongoing construction with left shoulder closures between mile markers 237 to 238 as part of truck-climbing lane additions expected to finish by June. Bridge replacements continue along Route 33 in Harrisonburg with anticipated completion by September.
Page County drivers should expect eastbound right shoulder closures on Route 211 near the Rappahannock line for sign work during weekdays.
Shenandoah County has overnight left lane closures planned northbound between mile markers 286 to 294 on I-81 for guardrail upgrades Thursday night, as well as slow-roll traffic control related to blasting operations later in the week.
Frederick County maintains overnight single-lane restrictions southbound on I-81 through April due to widening projects, alongside cable barrier installations northbound into late January.
Warren County’s section of Interstate highways features both day and night-time lane or shoulder restrictions associated with ongoing maintenance or construction efforts through February.
VDOT reminds motorists that all schedules may change due to weather or supply issues and urges caution when traveling through active work zones due to changing patterns and possible delays.
