Highway maintenance and construction projects are scheduled to take place across the Staunton District from October 27 to 31, 2025. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released a list of planned work that may affect traffic in the region, which includes 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Projects range from lane closures for bridge maintenance on Interstate 64 in Alleghany County to paving operations and fiber installation along primary and secondary roads in Rockbridge County. Several areas will experience single-lane or shoulder closures due to sign work, brush cutting, drainage improvements, or utility installations.

In Augusta County, work continues on the I-81 widening project between mile markers 222 and 227. Lane restrictions are also in place for the construction of truck-climbing lanes between mile markers 234 and 237. Other activities include installation of traffic sensors and equipment on major routes such as Route 11 (Commerce Road) and Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway).

Rockingham County will see ongoing work related to bridge replacements and interchange improvements along Route 33, with completion expected by September 2026. There are also several scheduled lane closures on Interstate 81 for sign work, utility operations, and ongoing construction at various locations.

Shenandoah County drivers should expect overnight lane closures for bridge work between mile markers 268 and 270 on I-81, as well as controlled blasting related to southbound widening near exits 296 to 298. In Frederick County, cable-barrier installation is taking place between mile markers 304 and 325 on I-81 during nighttime hours.

Other counties including Bath, Highland, Page, Clarke, Warren, and additional parts of the district will have flagger-controlled traffic for tasks such as tree removal, pipe replacement, grading, mowing operations, pavement patching, shoulder repairs, or bridge inspections.

According to VDOT: “Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. When traveling through a work zone, use extreme caution and be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.”

VDOT encourages travelers seeking updated information about road conditions or current alerts to dial 511 or visit the 511 Virginia website. The department’s Customer Service Center operates around-the-clock at (800)367-7623 or via its mobile-friendly site for reporting hazards or requesting services.
