Highway work is scheduled to take place across the Staunton District from December 22, 2025, to January 2, 2026. The district covers 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. All planned activities may be adjusted due to weather or material availability.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when traveling through work zones and to remain alert for changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

In Alleghany County, Interstate 64 eastbound will have left lane closures between mile markers 23 and 26 for bridge deck maintenance from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through January 2. Various primary and secondary roads will see flagger-controlled traffic for maintenance tasks such as tree removal, drainage work, pothole patching, and shoulder repairs on weekdays.

Bath County will have flagger-controlled inspections on Route 42 (Cowpasture River Highway) between Route 631 and Route 655 on December 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., along with routine maintenance on other roads during weekdays.

In Rockbridge County, an update indicates westbound I-64 at mile markers 57 to 56 will have left lane closures for overhead sign work on December 22–23. Several primary routes—including Routes 11, 60, 130, and 501—will have flagger traffic control for tree removal operations from December 22–31.

No lane closures are reported for Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County.

Augusta County’s I-81 widening project will result in single-lane traffic at exit ramp areas through December and again starting January. Shoulder closures northbound and southbound are expected around the clock through spring of next year. Additional roadwork includes intersection improvements on Route 254 (Hermitage Road) through May and utility work on Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) on December 22–23.

Rockingham County drivers should expect left shoulder closures along I-81 between mile markers 237 and 238 as part of truck-climbing lane construction. There will also be overnight single-lane closures at mile markers near the Route 253 overpass bridge during the night of December 30.

Other counties such as Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke, and Warren also report various maintenance projects ranging from tree removal to pipe replacement affecting both primary and secondary roads throughout this period.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) manages these projects as part of its mission to build, maintain, and operate Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels for safe transportation statewide (official website). VDOT oversees one of the largest state highway systems in the country (official website), providing services that include highway maintenance and traffic management systems like Virginia’s “511” information platform (official website).

For up-to-date travel alerts or information about road conditions during this period, motorists can dial “511,” visit the Virginia “511” website or use the mobile app. The VDOT Customer Service Center operates around the clock for reporting hazards or making service requests via their website or by calling their hotline at (800)367-7623.

VDOT encourages travelers to check its social media accounts for updates or visit its main website for news releases and project information.
