Highway work is scheduled across the Staunton District from December 15 to 19, 2025, with multiple lane and shoulder closures expected on interstates and primary roads in several counties. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advises drivers to use caution in work zones and be aware of changing traffic patterns.

In Alleghany County, Interstate 64 will have right shoulder closures between mile markers 15 and 20 for sign work from Monday through Friday, as well as left lane closures eastbound between mile markers 23 and 26 for deck repairs through January 2. Utility work on Route 60 and sign maintenance on Route 220 will also result in single lane closures during the week.

Bath County will see flagger-controlled traffic for shoulder repairs and pipe cleaning on both primary and secondary roads during weekdays. Rockbridge County’s Interstate 64 westbound lanes near mile marker 57 will have alternating closures for overhead sign work early in the week, while Interstate 81 southbound between mile markers 191 and 176 will experience right shoulder closures for sign installation.

In Augusta County, Interstate 81 northbound between mile markers 221 and 222 will have an overnight left lane closure for guardrail repairs on Monday night, with ongoing shoulder closures as part of the I-81 widening project expected to last through spring 2026. Additional restrictions are in place for truck-climbing lane construction between mile markers 232 and 237. Bridge inspections will lead to overnight single lane and shoulder closures later in the week.

Rockingham County’s segment of Interstate 81 from mile marker 242 to 248 will include ramp reconstruction at exit 247A, requiring a detour from Thursday morning to Friday afternoon. Lane restrictions continue due to bridge replacement projects, with completion anticipated by fall or September of 2026.

Other counties such as Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke, and Warren report similar activities involving mowing operations, brush cutting, pipe replacements, controlled blasting for widening projects on I-81 southbound, bridge inspections, culvert inspection, utility work, pavement patching, ditching operations, tree removal and various safety improvements.

VDOT reminds travelers that all schedules may change due to weather or material supply issues.
