Stafford County will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at the Stafford Regional Airport, featuring a mobile history unit and a restored P-51 Mustang airplane, according to an April 24 announcement. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at 95 Aviation Way in Fredericksburg.
The ceremony aims to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country and share the stories of the Tuskegee Airmen and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), groups that played significant roles during World War II but received limited recognition at the time. The Rise Above exhibit includes a mobile theater with documentaries, interpretive displays, and educational resources about these pioneering aviators.
Chris Allen, Director of the Commemorative Air Force Rise Above Squadron’s Traveling Exhibit and P-51C Mustang, will serve as keynote speaker alongside Stafford County Board of Supervisors Chairman Deuntay Diggs. “Memorial Day is when we honor and recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country as well as their families,” said Diggs. “We are honored to have the opportunity to share the history of the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs), many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II and were given limited recognition at the time.”
The CAF RISE ABOVE Squadron operates nationwide educational outreach programs highlighting these historical figures’ achievements through films, exhibits, and classroom materials. The exhibit will be open daily from May 22 through May 25 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with special group viewings available upon request.
Stafford County Public Schools District enrolled approximately 31,700 students during the 2023-24 school year according to official data. Among its schools, Brooke Point High School had the highest enrollment with over two thousand students as reported by state records. White students represented nearly thirty-nine percent of district enrollment while Hispanic students accounted for about one quarter according to demographic reports.
School enrollment increased by roughly one point seven percent compared to last year according to state education statistics. For early learners in Stafford County schools during this period, Rising Star Early Childhood Education Center welcomed more than half of all pre-kindergarteners in its cohort based on education data, while Rocky Run Elementary School enrolled just over seven percent of kindergarteners countywide according to state figures.
Organizers say they hope that events like this help bring important historical stories into focus for both local residents and students.
