Contractor crews working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin a continuous, multiday full closure of South Church Street (Route 258/10 Business) at the bridge over Cypress Creek in Smithfield. The closure is scheduled to start as early as Thursday, August 7 at 2 a.m., and is part of an ongoing bridge replacement project.

The closure is necessary so that crews can complete a concrete deck pour and related roadway surface activities. According to VDOT, heavy equipment must be placed within travel lanes to deliver and install concrete across several bridge spans and the sidewalk. Unlike earlier daytime closures for beam removal and placement, this phase requires that the bridge remain closed to all traffic in both directions throughout the application and curing period.

A signed detour will be in place for westbound motorists, directing them at the bridge to turn around and access the Route 258/10 bypass via South Church Street/Benns Church Boulevard. The long-term closure for eastbound traffic will remain in effect, with drivers continuing to use Main Street to connect with South Church Street/Benns Church Boulevard before reaching the bypass.

VDOT expects that, weather permitting, the full closure could last through August 8 or until the concrete has cured and heavy equipment has been removed. Once this work is finished, South Church Street will reopen for westbound traffic only; eastbound traffic will continue on its existing detour route.

Pedestrian access across the bridge remains closed during this period. However, access to all businesses and private residences on either side of South Church Street near the bridge will be maintained.

The schedule for construction may change depending on weather or other factors. More information about this project can be found on VDOT’s project page: https://www.virginiadot.org/projects/hamptonroads/south_church_street_route_258-10_business_over_cypress_creek_rehabilitation.asp

“Access to all businesses and private residences on either side of the bridge on South Church Street will remain accessible during this closure.”

“This construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.”
