Snowfall on Monday has led to challenging road conditions across the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The region is experiencing its third winter storm in less than a week, with snow that began early Monday morning expected to continue into the afternoon. Central and southern parts of the area could see up to four inches of accumulation.
VDOT crews are working to plow and treat roads throughout the 11-county Staunton District. Officials have advised drivers to delay travel until temperatures rise and road conditions improve. “Icing is a significant concern Monday night and Tuesday morning, when temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing. Wet or slushy roadways may refreeze and create dangerous driving conditions. Bridges, overpasses and untreated surfaces are most at risk,” VDOT stated.
As of 11 a.m., Interstate 81 had minor issues in Rockbridge, Augusta, and Rockingham counties but was clear in Shenandoah and Frederick counties. Interstate 64 saw moderate problems in Alleghany County and minor ones in Rockbridge and Augusta counties. Interstate 66 remained clear in Warren County.
Primary roads showed moderate conditions in Alleghany and Bath counties, with minor concerns reported for Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, and Page counties. Secondary roads followed a similar pattern.
Motorists can get updated information by dialing 511 or visiting the 511 Virginia website, which provides real-time traffic alerts through an interactive map as well as county-by-county text listings.
Road condition categories include “minor” for mostly bare pavement with isolated spots of snow or ice; “moderate” for snow or ice on major portions; “severe” for drifting or partially blocked roads; and “closed” when no traffic is allowed.
The VDOT Customer Service Center operates around the clock for reporting hazards or seeking information about Virginia’s transportation network via its mobile-friendly website or by calling 800-367-7623.
The Staunton District covers Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath counties.
