Road conditions in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands remain challenging due to snow showers expected on Thursday, February 20. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reports that high temperatures will stay below freezing, with up to three inches of snow already on the ground from a previous storm. Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel.
As of early Thursday morning, VDOT has reported clear conditions on Interstates 64, 66, and 81 within the Staunton District. Primary roads in Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, and Page counties have minor conditions, while other counties such as Alleghany and Bath report clear roads. Secondary roads show moderate conditions in several counties including Rockbridge and Augusta.
The southeastern part of Virginia has received more significant snowfall since Wednesday morning, leading to hazardous road conditions. Travelers are urged to check local weather updates and road conditions through 511Virginia before setting out.
The VDOT continues its efforts in plowing and treating roads across its 11-county Staunton District. Their priorities include clearing the Interstate Highway System first, followed by primary roads and major secondary routes. Lower-priority routes will be addressed as resources become available.
VDOT provides multiple resources for travelers including their website at https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/ and the updated 511Virginia service at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/. These platforms offer traffic cameras, crash locations, weather updates, and allow users to sign up for alerts.
For further assistance or inquiries about road conditions or services, residents can contact the VDOT Customer Service Center via their website or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623). Additionally, updates can be found on social media through VDOT’s statewide accounts.
The Staunton District serves Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany and Bath counties.
