Construction on Smyth County’s first roundabout is nearing completion, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The single-lane roundabout is situated at the intersection of Route 11 and Browns Subdivision Road.

VDOT has provided guidance for motorists on how to navigate the new traffic feature. Drivers are advised to look left and yield to both traffic within the roundabout and pedestrians before entering. It is important to enter when safe and use turn signals to indicate intended exits.

Roundabouts offer several benefits over traditional intersections. They improve safety by reducing vehicle crossing points and eliminating right-angle and head-on crash potential. Additionally, they enhance efficiency and provide a cost-effective alternative to traffic signals in the long run.

Further information on navigating roundabouts can be found on VDOT’s website: https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/about/our-system/highways/innovative-intersections/roundabout/

The construction project, valued at approximately $3 million, is being executed by Ramirez Contracting, LLC, based in Abingdon.

Looking ahead, a second roundabout project on Route 11 will be advertised for bids in November 2025. This project aims to construct a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Routes 11 and 660 (Adwolfe Road), near Interstate 81’s mile marker 40.9 in Smyth County. Currently in the right-of-way phase, construction is expected to commence in early 2026 with an estimated duration of 18 months.
