Sean Cox, a school security officer at Sandston Elementary School, was honored as the “Yay of the Day” recipient, according to a May 11 announcement from Henrico County Public Schools. Superintendent Amy Cashwell presented the recognition to Cox for his work supporting students and contributing positively to the school community.

The acknowledgment highlights efforts by staff members like Cox who help foster positive learning environments. Henrico County Public Schools focused on delivering positive learning experiences to students via dedicated staff in educational and support roles, as noted on the official website.

Nominator Lila Hiltz said, “He is not just our school security officer, but our student ‘support’ officer. He truly sees every student and connects with them. If a student has a behavior challenge or needs a break, he is right there willing to listen and have talks about better choices. He spends his lunch with students in the cafeteria, and greets everyone with fist bumps. He is willing to help out however he can support kids.” Hiltz also described how Cox helped a struggling student: “A specific example of a time he made a positive impact is when a student was having a difficult day and wasn’t completing any work. He took him for a walk to calm down, then got the assignment and worked with him to get it completed. While working, he listened to the student share what made him frustrated and what challenges he was having in completing the assignment.”

Amy Cashwell served as superintendent of Henrico County Public Schools, according to the official website. The division extended educational services across Henrico County, Virginia—adjacent to Richmond—and adopted the motto “The right to achieve. The support to succeed,” according to its official website.

Cox’s recognition marks number 83 in an ongoing series that celebrates individuals making positive differences within Henrico schools.
