A safety and resurfacing project on Route 610, known as Old Plank Road in Spotsylvania County, is set to commence next week. The initiative aims to mitigate crash risks and enhance the road’s surface quality.

The project will involve widening the road shoulders between Route 3 (Plank Road) and Route 612 (Catharpin Road). This will extend nearly four miles of Old Plank Road by up to two feet on each side. According to officials, “shoulder widening provides more recovery space for drivers if their vehicle strays from the travel lanes,” thereby reducing potential crashes and injuries from vehicles veering off the road.

The work is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday, June 2. It will feature a mobile work zone operation between Route 3 and Catharpin Road, with travelers experiencing one-way, alternating traffic directed by a flagging crew.

Construction will occur from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, over approximately four weeks, contingent on weather conditions. This endeavor represents a collaboration between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Spotsylvania County.

Initial efforts will focus on shoulder widening before resurfacing Old Plank Road. A new asphalt layer will be applied to create a uniform appearance and smoother surface. Additionally, new centerline and edge line lane markings will be painted for improved visibility.

The project’s completion is anticipated by the end of June. Currently, Old Plank Road accommodates an average of 3,300 vehicles daily between Route 3 and Catharpin Road.
