University of Virginia Dean and Markel Families Men’s Head Basketball Coach Ryan Odom announced on June 1 the promotion of Matt Hart to general manager and director of player development for the men’s basketball program.

Hart previously served as UVA’s director of analytics during the 2025–26 season after holding a similar position under Odom at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2023 to 2025. In his most recent season, Hart contributed to the Cavaliers achieving a 30–6 record, finishing as runners-up in both the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season and conference tournament, and securing their first NCAA Tournament win since 2019 with a victory over Wright State in the first round.

“I am thrilled to promote Matt as the first general manager/director of player development in the history of Virginia Men’s Basketball,” Odom said. “His leadership, experience, and forward-thinking approach have already made a significant impact as we navigate the changing landscape of college basketball. Matt’s vision and deep understanding of the game will be invaluable in shaping the future of our program and strengthening our culture both on and off the court.”

In his new role, Hart will work closely with Odom on responsibilities such as roster construction, talent evaluation, resource allocation, transfer portal management, and overseeing player development efforts at UVA.

“I am extremely grateful and excited for this opportunity given to me by Coach Odom and Director of Athletics Carla Williams,” Hart said. “Virginia’s basketball tradition speaks for itself. My goal is to honor, protect, and advance that tradition by finding the right players who fit our culture and this prestigious institution.”

Hart has also contributed to successful seasons at VCU—including helping lead them to a 52-21 record over two years—and held coaching or support roles at Utah State University, Daemen University, George Washington University, as well as playing professionally in several countries. He holds degrees from George Washington University (bachelor’s) and Purdue University Global (MBA).
