The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 31 that a section of Route 602 (Copper Line Road) in Louisa County will be closed for pipe replacement work on April 7 and April 8. The closure will occur daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., affecting the stretch from Route 658 (Jackson Road) to about half a mile south of that intersection.

Motorists traveling south of the closure are directed to use Route 601 (Paynes Mill Road), then continue onto Route 661 (Crewsville Road), which reconnects with Route 602. Northbound drivers will follow the same detour in reverse order. All construction is dependent on weather conditions, and drivers are urged to exercise caution and adhere to posted detour signs.

Local updates about road conditions can be found on VDOT’s Culpeper District social media channels, including X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page. Real-time traffic information, access to VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras, and additional travel resources are available through the Virginia Department of Transportation’s free mobile app or by calling Virginia’s statewide travel information number.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation focuses on building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels across Virginia as part of its mission for safe and efficient transportation systems. The agency manages one of the largest state highway networks in the United States, overseeing tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to its official website.

VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia’s “511,” and supervises land-use permits along state routes according to its official website. As outlined by its official website, VDOT is responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining roadways throughout the state.

The department traces its origins back to the State Highway Commission established in 1906 before evolving into today’s agency responsible for managing an expanding transportation infrastructure according to its official website. Its headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to information from its official website.
