Motorists in Pittsylvania County are being advised to prepare for delays as the Route 817 (Mountain Drive) bridge over Turkeycock Creek has been closed to through traffic. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that the closure will remain in effect until further notice.

VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system. The agency manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia. VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through tools like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes. As a state agency, VDOT oversees the planning, construction, and maintenance of roadways, bridges, and tunnels throughout Virginia. The department traces its origins back to the 1906 State Highway Commission and has evolved over time to manage the state’s expanding transportation infrastructure. Its headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond.

No estimated reopening date has been provided for Route 817 at Turkeycock Creek.
