The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has initiated a safety enhancement project on Route 743, also known as Advance Mills Road, in northern Albemarle County. The construction involves widening the road’s shoulder between Route 641 (Frays Mill Road) and Sunflower Fields Drive.

To facilitate the work, Route 743 is temporarily closed to through traffic within the project area, though all driveways remain accessible. As part of the improvements, a pipe beneath the roadway will be extended. Once completed, the widened shoulder aims to improve safety along the northbound lane at a sharp turn located about a quarter mile south of Sunflower Fields Drive.

For those navigating around the closure, drivers heading north on Advance Mills Road should travel south and take U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) north, then proceed west on Route 607 (Cedar Grove Road) to reconnect with Route 743. Southbound drivers are advised to take Route 743 north to Cedar Grove Road and then head south to access U.S. 29.

Weather permitting, VDOT expects the project to conclude by Friday, March 14.

Local updates for conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District can be found on X.com/VaDOTCulp and their Facebook page.

Current traffic conditions, alongside VDOT’s statewide network of traffic cameras and other real-time travel information, are available on the 511Virginia website. This information is also accessible via the free VDOT 511 mobile app or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.

VDOT’s Culpeper District encompasses Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties. The independent city of Charlottesville maintains its own roads.
