A section of Route 721 (Free State Road) in Fauquier County will be closed on Tuesday, December 9, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The closure is necessary to replace a deteriorated cross pipe and will occur about 2.4 miles south of Route 647 (Crest Hill Road).

Message boards have been set up to inform drivers about the closure. VDOT has established a signed detour that directs northbound traffic onto Route 724 (Ada Road) and Route 647 (Crest Hill Road) before reconnecting with Route 721. Southbound drivers will use the same detour in reverse. Local traffic will still be able to access all driveway entrances along Route 721.

An alternative detour route is also available via Route 733 (Wilson Road), Route 689, and Route 691 (Carters Run Road), then continuing north to Route 719 and Route 647 before returning to Free State Road.

The project is expected to finish by the end of the day on December 9, depending on weather conditions.
