Route 701 (Belle Meade Road) in Louisa County has reopened to traffic after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) completed major construction on a new bridge over Little River. The project, which cost $4.7 million, replaced the previous bridge built in 1985 with a new structure featuring concrete slabs and an asphalt riding surface. According to VDOT, the new bridge meets current design and safety standards and removes the former 12-ton weight restriction.

Only pavement marking work remains before all construction activities are finished. VDOT expressed appreciation for drivers’ patience during the closure and detour period. “VDOT thanks motorists and residents for their patience during the closure and detour period.”

Additional information about the Route 701 bridge replacement can be found on VDOT’s project page. Updates specific to conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are shared on their X account and through their Facebook group.
