Route 628, spanning the Mattaponi River at the King and Queen and King William county line, has reopened following extensive repairs. The closure, initiated after a routine inspection in March 2023 revealed significant deterioration, prompted the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to accelerate repairs for motorist safety.

Crews have now dismantled signs marking the 22-mile detour, completing the $4.2 million project. VDOT expedited the emergency repair design and timetable, culminating in the full replacement of the bridge’s superstructure. This included new beams, deck, rails, and travel surface.

Originally slated for June 2025, the repair completion ran ahead of schedule, allowing the bridge and road to reopen sooner than anticipated.
