The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on March 25 that a section of Route 626 (Berry Farm Road) in Augusta County near Verona will be closed from March 30 through April 9 as crews work to replace an existing concrete bridge with a concrete pipe.

The closure affects the stretch between Route 612 (Quicks Mill Road) and Route 613 (Spring Hill Road). During this period, drivers will need to follow detour signs using those roads. All scheduled work is weather dependent and may change if conditions require.

This project is part of ongoing efforts by the Virginia Department of Transportation to maintain and improve infrastructure across the state. The department’s main focus is building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system, according to the official website.

Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, which covers tens of thousands of lane-miles throughout Virginia. The agency also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight for land-use permits along state routes. Its responsibilities include planning, construction, and maintenance for roadways, bridges, and tunnel systems statewide.

The department has evolved since its beginnings as the State Highway Commission in 1906 into its current form overseeing transportation infrastructure needs across Virginia. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond.

Travelers seeking updated traffic alerts or travel information can dial 511 or visit the online resources provided by VDOT. The VDOT Customer Service Center operates around-the-clock for hazard reports or service requests.
