Route 601, also known as Bush Mill Road, in Northumberland County, has reopened following a maintenance project completed ahead of schedule by nearly two months. The road, which had been closed since February 12, underwent repairs to address a box culvert.

Initially, the closure between Route 604 (Hazard Drive) and Route 611 (Gilliams Road) was scheduled to last until early June. Crews have now restored access and are in the process of removing signs and barriers put in place for the seven-mile detour.

This project is part of a $3.1 million maintenance effort targeting multiple structures in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula areas to handle scour—defined as the erosion of soil around the foundation of box culverts or bridges.

According to the most recent traffic count by VDOT, approximately 300 vehicles use Bush Mill Road daily.
