Contractor crews working on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Interchange Improvements Project will implement a series of weekend overnight full closures on Route 58 in Suffolk during November. The closures will affect only one direction at a time between the median crossover at the SPSA entrance (Bob Foeller Drive) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) commercial truck weigh station. Detours with signs will be provided for motorists.
The overnight closures are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Daytime weekend hours will see both directions open to all traffic.
Weather permitting, westbound Route 58 is set to close as early as November 7-9, with backup dates of November 14-16. Eastbound closures are planned for as early as November 14-16, with backup dates of November 21-23.
These closures are required for placing steel beams across each bridge span over Route 58 travel lanes. The process involves unloading beams from flatbed trucks and positioning them using large cranes onsite.
Access to the SPSA facility, Hampton Roads Executive Airport, local businesses, and residences along Route 58 will remain available during these periods. The DMV weigh station will stay accessible in the direction that remains open.
Additional similar overnight closures with detours are expected periodically through spring 2026 to support further beam placement activities as construction continues on the flyover across Route 58. Advance public notifications will be issued before any additional full closures.
“Motorists are encouraged to limit overnight weekend travel on Route 58 through the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free,” according to VDOT.
VDOT recommends travelers check current road conditions before driving by using its free 511 Virginia traffic tools or the Waze GPS app integrated with these services for updates about construction impacts or incidents.
The SPSA Interchange Improvements Project aims to improve safety by building a dedicated flyover ramp for eastbound traffic entering Bob Foeller Drive from Route 58, replacing an existing at-grade median crossing and removing crossover conflicts with westbound vehicles. The new ramp will merge with the existing westbound entrance into the SPSA facility.
