The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on April 2 that contractor crews are scheduled to begin removing the long-term right-lane closure on Route 58 east in Suffolk, which has been in place since June 2025 for the Southeastern Public Service Authority Interchange Improvements Project. All three eastbound travel lanes will be reopened to motorists once the closure is lifted.

The reopening marks a significant milestone for drivers who have experienced lane restrictions during construction. The closure was required to allow pavement widening and construction of a ramp and flyover designed to improve safety and traffic flow along Route 58.

To safely remove temporary barriers, two eastbound lanes will be closed overnight for up to several nights starting as early as April 2, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Long-term shoulder closures between the SPSA entrance and the weigh station will remain, along with intermittent single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and as late as 5 a.m., according to officials. Additional brief stoppages may occur throughout ongoing construction phases. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously through the work zone where speed limits remain reduced to 50 miles per hour.

All scheduled work depends on weather conditions and may change accordingly. The SPSA Interchange Improvements Project aims to enhance safety by building a dedicated flyover ramp for eastbound traffic entering Bob Foeller Drive at the SPSA entrance, closing an existing at-grade median crossing, and eliminating crossover conflicts with westbound vehicles.

According to the official website, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) builds, maintains, and operates roads, bridges, and tunnels across Virginia’s extensive state highway system—one of the largest in the nation—and oversees services such as highway maintenance and land-use permits along state routes. VDOT originated from the State Highway Commission formed in 1906 before evolving into its current structure overseeing transportation infrastructure planning, construction, and maintenance statewide.

VDOT’s headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond.
