Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Interchange Improvements Project are set to begin a long-term, single-lane closure on Route 58 east in Suffolk as early as June 2. The closure will reduce travel lanes from three to two, starting near the Route 58 median crossover at the SPSA entrance (Bob Foeller Drive) and extending for approximately half a mile, ending just west of the weigh station. This right lane closure is expected to remain until late 2025.
The lane reduction is necessary for pavement widening along Route 58 east and constructing an on-ramp and new bridge abutment. To ensure safety during this phase, temporary barriers will be installed by June 1.
Throughout the construction period, additional intermittent lane closures or brief stoppages may occur in both directions during times of lower traffic volumes. As construction progresses, further changes are anticipated when crews shift flyover activities toward the median and western lanes.
Motorists should exercise caution and remain vigilant for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone. The speed limit on Route 58 remains reduced to 50 miles per hour through this area.
The schedule for these works is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, it may change accordingly.
This project aims to enhance safety on Route 58 by building a dedicated flyover ramp for eastbound traffic entering the SPSA entrance at Bob Foeller Drive. This will replace the current at-grade median crossing and eliminate crossover conflicts with westbound traffic. The new flyover ramp will merge with the existing westbound entrance to the SPSA facility from Route 58.
