After being closed since Tuesday due to flooding, Route 501 in Halifax County, near Route 96 (Virgilina Rd.), is back open to traffic.

Dropping water levels allowed VDOT crews to inspect the structures over Hyco River early this morning and determine they are safe for travel. The detour for that closure is being removed. Route 96 (Virgilina Rd.) remains closed.

At least six roads in Halifax County remain closed at this time. VDOT reminds everyone to use extra caution and never attempt to drive over a flooded roadway. “Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult, 12 inches can carry away most cars. Turn around. Don’t drown.”
