The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 26 that a traffic switch will take place along Route 460 in the Grundy area beginning March 31, with April 1 as an alternate date if there is inclement weather. The change is related to the ongoing construction of Route 460/121 Poplar Creek Phase B and will occur approximately 1.1 miles west of the intersection of Route 460 and Route 83 (Riverside Drive/Edgewater Drive).

The upcoming traffic switch is important for local drivers, as it may affect travel patterns and require extra caution while driving through the area.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia, according to the official website. VDOT’s responsibilities include building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels throughout the state to support a safe and efficient transportation system according to its official website.

VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website. The agency oversees planning, construction, and maintenance activities for roadways statewide according to its official website.

Historically, VDOT developed from the State Highway Commission established in 1906 through various organizational changes designed to address Virginia’s growing transportation needs according to its official website. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to its official website.

As construction continues on Route 460/121 Poplar Creek Phase B near Grundy, motorists are encouraged by VDOT officials to remain alert for changing conditions during this period.
