The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Mar. 18 that construction will begin the week of March 30 for a safety improvement project at the intersection of Route 360 and Route 647 (Mill Road) in King William County.

The project aims to enhance safety and traffic flow at a busy intersection by extending the existing left turn lane on Route 360 westbound at Mill Road, providing more space for vehicles turning left and keeping through traffic moving. A concrete island will also be installed to prevent certain left turns into and out of Sleepy Hollow Drive, requiring drivers seeking eastbound access to first turn right and then make a U-turn at Kennington Parkway.

Construction crews will start mobilizing on March 23 to install and cover work zone signs ahead of the project’s official start. Once construction begins, these signs will be uncovered. The $1.9 million project is funded through Virginia’s SMART Scale program, with J.R. Caskey serving as the contractor. The work is expected to be completed by August 2026. During construction, motorists should expect daytime single lane closures, closure of the crossover on Route 360 at Mill Road, and closure of the westbound left turn lane for the duration of the project.

Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to the official website. The agency provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to the official website.

VDOT serves as a state agency overseeing planning, construction, and maintenance for roads, bridges, and tunnels throughout Virginia according to the official website. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to the official website. The department has evolved from its origins as the State Highway Commission in 1906 through various iterations to manage Virginia’s expanding transportation infrastructure according to the official website.

Motorists can find updates about lane closures, work zones, traffic conditions and other incidents using VDOT’s information system known as Virginia 511.
