Route 33 in Harrisonburg will be closed in both directions between South Carlton Street and Linda Lane/Burgess Road from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. on May 20, 2025. This closure is necessary for bridge deck pour operations on the new Route 33 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The work is part of ongoing construction at the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange.
The detour for westbound Route 33 involves turning left on Burgess Road, right on Evelyn Byrd Avenue, right on Reservoir Street, and then right on South Carlton Street to return to Route 33. Eastbound drivers will turn right on South Carlton Street, left on Reservoir Street, left on Evelyn Byrd Avenue, and then left on Burgess Road.
I-81 southbound Exit 247B will also be closed during these hours with a message board alerting drivers. Those needing access to Route 33 should take exit 247A and follow digital message signs guiding them through the detour route.
Similarly, I-81 northbound Exit 247B will be closed with instructions for drivers to use exit 247A instead.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) states that all work is weather permitting and schedules may change. VDOT contractors are replacing two Route 33 bridges over I-81 at exit 247 along with railway bridges west of the interchange as part of a project scheduled for completion in summer 2026. Triton Construction Inc., headquartered in St. Albans, W.Va., was awarded a $43.3 million contract for this project in July 2022.
