The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the early completion of the Route 3/Route 14 westbound bridge rehabilitation project over Burke Mill Stream in Mathews County. The improved structure, located at the border of Mathews and Gloucester counties, is now open to traffic.
The project, which cost $5.5 million, began in July 2024. It involved replacing the bridge deck, beams, railings, guardrails, and asphalt. Additional work included upgrades to drainage systems and nearby slopes on the 76-year-old bridge.
During construction, left turns from Route 3 (Windsor Road) onto Route 14 eastbound were not permitted. With the project’s completion, this restriction has been lifted and related signage removed. A message board is currently alerting drivers to the restored left-turn access at the intersection.
VDOT stated that “Traffic has been shifted and currently traveling over the improved Route 3/14 westbound structure, located at the Mathews and Gloucester line.”
The speed limit approaching this area will remain at 35 mph due to ongoing construction on a separate project: improvements to the Route 14 bridge over North End Branch in Mathews County. That project is expected to finish by June 2026. Updates can be found on VDOT’s official website at https://vdot.virginia.gov.
