Drivers traveling through the Route 3/14 (John Clayton Memorial Highway) bridge rehabilitation area at the Gloucester County and Mathews County line will encounter a new traffic pattern starting Wednesday, August 13. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), crews will begin shifting traffic onto the newly rehabilitated bridge deck over Burke Mill Stream after 8 a.m. that day.
Motorists are advised to pay attention to signs, construction barrels, and new pavement markings that will direct them through the updated work zone layout. The 35 mph speed limit remains in effect throughout the project area.
Left turns from Windsor Road onto Route 14 eastbound will continue to be prohibited until construction is completed in November 2025. This restriction is part of ongoing safety measures during the work.
The bridge rehabilitation began in July 2024 and includes replacement of the bridge deck, beams, railings, and guardrails. Additional improvements involve adjustments to road slope as well as minor repairs to wingwalls and abutments.
“This $5.5 million project is being funded through Virginia’s State of Good Repair program.”
The scheduled traffic shift depends on weather conditions. If inclement weather prevents work on Wednesday, August 13, it will be postponed to Thursday, August 14.
