The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on May 1 that Route 29 between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive in Fairfax will have weekday lane closures from Monday, May 4, through Friday, May 15. The closures are part of ongoing work for the Route 29 widening project.

Single-lane closures are planned along northbound Route 29 between Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive and Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive from May 4 to May 8 and again from May 11 to May 15, each day between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Southbound lanes between Summit Drive/Buckleys Gate Drive and Union Mill Road/Centreville Farms Drive will be closed during the same date ranges but from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes.

The Route 29 widening project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, as well as bicyclist and pedestrian accessibility along this corridor. Planned improvements include reconstructing and widening a stretch of roadway from four lanes to six over approximately one-and-a-half miles, correcting vertical alignment for better sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and connecting with pedestrian/bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. The project is expected to be completed this summer.
