Weather permitting, the right lane of southbound Route 29 in Fairfax will be closed on Tuesday, May 20, from Meadow Estates Drive/Hampton Forest Way to Stringfellow Road/Clifton Road. The closure is scheduled between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. to facilitate water main tie-ins as part of the ongoing Route 29 widening project. This information was provided by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Efforts will be made to reopen the southbound right lane by 3 p.m., though it may remain closed until as late as 5 p.m. Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and consider alternate routes.
The Route 29 widening project aims to enhance safety, traffic flow, and accessibility for bicyclists and pedestrians along the stretch between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive. Key improvements include reconstructing and expanding a 1.5-mile section from four lanes to six, correcting vertical alignment for better sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and improving connectivity at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. The project is expected to conclude in spring 2026.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution when navigating active work zones, remain attentive to new traffic patterns, and minimize distractions.
