The Virginia Department of Transportation has announced a closure of Willowmeade Drive (Route 5407) between Route 29 and Knight Arch Road (Route 7699). Initially set to take place from April 9 to April 12, the closure has been rescheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 14, and end at 7 a.m. on Thursday, April 17. The closure, dependent on weather conditions, is necessary to continue installing a water main, which is part of the Route 29 widening project.
During this 72-hour period, access to properties along Willowmeade Drive will remain open, although the section from Route 29 to just south of the driveway of 5105 Willowmeade Drive will be inaccessible.
A detour will redirect traffic via Route 29, Meadow Estates Drive (Route 7885), and Knight Arch Road back onto Willowmeade Drive. Drivers should follow the detour signs posted along the route.
The Route 29 widening initiative aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and the accessibility and connectivity for both bicyclists and pedestrians. The project involves reconstructing and widening 1.5 miles of the roadway from four to six lanes, correcting the vertical alignment to enhance sight distance, and adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29. Additionally, it will provide connectivity to pedestrian and bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. The project is expected to reach completion in spring 2026.
