Weather permitting, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the northbound right lane of Route 29 between Clifton Road/Stringfellow Road (Route 645) and Sandy Point Lane (Route 7983) on several days in January for paving work related to the Route 29 widening project. The closures are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 7; Thursday, Jan. 8; Friday, Jan. 9; and Monday, Jan. 12 through Friday, Jan. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

According to VDOT, “Drivers should expect delays and are advised to use alternate routes.”

The Route 29 widening project aims to improve safety and traffic flow as well as enhance access for bicyclists and pedestrians along the corridor between Union Mill Road and Buckleys Gate Drive. Project elements include reconstructing and expanding a section of roadway from four lanes to six, correcting vertical alignment to increase sight distance, adding shared-use paths on both sides of Route 29, and providing connections to pedestrian and bicycle trails at the Fairfax County Parkway/West Ox Road interchange. The project is expected to be completed this spring.

VDOT manages one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the United States, overseeing road construction, maintenance, and traffic management across Virginia (https://www.vdot.virginia.gov). The agency also provides information about traffic conditions, work zones, and incidents online at 511.vdot.virginia.gov, via its mobile app or by calling 511 anywhere in Virginia.
