Nighttime closures are planned for Route 29 at the Fairfax County Parkway interchange to allow for bridge beam installation as part of the Fairfax County Parkway widening north project, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 29 will be closed at various times starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, through Friday, August 8. Additional backup dates are scheduled from August 11 to August 15 in case of delays. The closures will take place overnight, reopening by 5 a.m. each morning.
Detours will be in place during these closures. Northbound Route 29 traffic and drivers heading from southbound Fairfax County Parkway to northbound Route 29 will be rerouted via southbound Fairfax County Parkway, eastbound Braddock Road (Route 620), and then back onto northbound Fairfax County Parkway before returning to Route 29. Southbound Route 29 traffic and vehicles coming from northbound Fairfax County Parkway to southbound Route 29 will use northbound Fairfax County Parkway, the ramp to westbound I-66, the westbound I-66 collector-distributor lane, Exit 55A to Springfield, and then return via southbound Fairfax County Parkway.
The overall project aims to widen about four miles of Fairfax County Parkway from four lanes to six between Ladues End Lane/Nomes Court and Route 29. The work also includes expanding bridges over Braddock Road and Route 29, adding noise walls near the interchange area, and constructing an acceleration lane for vehicles turning from Nomes Court onto northbound Fairfax County Parkway.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-2027.
