Construction has started on Route 254 (Hermitage Road) in Augusta County, focusing on safety improvements at three intersections. The initial phase of work is taking place at the intersections with Route 262/254 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway/New Hope Road) and Route 792 (Indian Mound Road/Balsley Road). Construction at the intersection with Route 640 (Old White Bridge Road) is planned to begin next spring.
Drivers traveling through these areas should expect delays due to flagger-controlled traffic and rumble strips on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Early activities include survey work, sign installation, and stormwater drainage improvements.
The main enhancements will involve adding turn lanes, reconstructing nonstandard approaches, and improving sight distance at the affected intersections. More details are available on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s project page.
A construction contract valued at $2.5 million was awarded in October 2025 to S.L. Williamson Co. Inc., based in Charlottesville, Virginia. The project is expected to be completed by June 2026, depending on weather conditions.
