A project by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to improve safety at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 610 (Woods Cross Road/Davenport Road) in Gloucester County has been completed.

The new traffic pattern allows travelers on Route 17 to make left turns onto Woods Cross Road and Davenport Road. Drivers on Woods Cross Road or Davenport Road who want to turn left onto Route 17 must now first make a right turn, then use new crossovers less than 900 feet from the intersection to complete a U-turn. Signs and pavement markings have been installed to guide drivers through these changes.

With construction finished, all barrels, work zone signs, and other temporary traffic control devices have been removed from the area.

Construction began in March 2025 for this $5.1 million project, which was funded through the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP).

According to information from the official website, VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels as part of its mission to support a safe and efficient transportation system. The agency manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country, oversees planning and construction projects like this one in Gloucester County, provides highway maintenance services, manages traffic through systems such as Virginia 511, and issues land-use permits along state routes.

VDOT originated from the State Highway Commission established in 1906. Its headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond.
