Route 17 northbound at the bridge over Dragon Run, located at the line between Gloucester County and Middlesex County, has been reduced to a single lane following a vehicle crash that damaged the bridge rail and guardrail earlier today.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), crews inspected the bridge after the incident. The right lane on Route 17 northbound is closed at the bridge until further notice, while the left lane remains open for traffic. Southbound Route 17 traffic uses a separate bridge over Dragon Run, and both southbound lanes remain open.

Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2026 to replace the Route 17 northbound bridge over Dragon Run. VDOT stated that “When the $14.6 million project is complete in December 2027, the new bridge will be wider, taller, and longer than the existing bridge, which was built in 1931.”
