Route 1 travelers should prepare for a temporary travel lane shift near the Route 606 (Morris Road/Mudd Tavern Road) intersection in Spotsylvania County. This change will begin the evening of Tuesday, April 22.
The planned modification will shift both northbound and southbound Route 1 lanes slightly to the right to facilitate median construction. Law enforcement will manage traffic at the Route 1 and Morris Road/Mudd Tavern Road intersection as required from 8 p.m. on April 22 until 5 a.m. on April 23. Overnight, drivers should be ready for alternating lane closures due to the lane shift.
This traffic adjustment coincides with the nearing completion of construction aimed at widening Mudd Tavern Road to four lanes. Approximately 15,000 vehicles daily traverse the area between Route 1 and I-95 using Mudd Tavern Road.
Two separate projects are being managed under a single construction contract. These include a $25.7 million initiative to widen Mudd Tavern Road and a $9.1 million project to build Route 2092, a new secondary road running parallel to Mudd Tavern Road. This new road will intersect with Dan Bell Lane and South Roxbury Mill Road. Construction started in February 2023 and is projected to conclude by late May 2025.
Once complete, the project will feature a roundabout on Mudd Tavern Road between I-95 and Route 1 to support access to Route 2092. The new Route 2092 will be a two-lane roadway enhancing connectivity between properties north of Mudd Tavern Road in the Thornburg area, with another roundabout controlling traffic at its access road midpoint.
