Construction to replace the Route 1 bridge over Chopawamsic Creek in Stafford County will begin on Monday, February 23. The existing bridge, which is 93 years old, is located near the border of Stafford County and Prince William County.
For the first two weeks of the project, daytime work will be necessary for tree removal. During this period, single lane closures are scheduled for both northbound and southbound lanes on Route 1 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., from Monday, February 23 through Friday, February 27, and again from Monday, March 2 through Friday, March 6.
Travelers on Route 1 are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution while moving through the work zone between Corporate Drive in Stafford and Russell Road in Prince William. The demolition of the current bridge and construction of a new four-lane structure will take place in phases to limit disruptions to traffic flow.
The bridge replacement project is expected to be completed by June 2028. It has a budget of $13.8 million and is funded through Virginia’s State of Good Repair program.
According to recent traffic counts, more than 22,400 vehicles travel daily on this section of Route 1.
Updates about work zones will be available on the project page at vdot.virginia.gov. Information about lane closures and other incidents can also be found through Virginia’s statewide traffic management system at 511Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) oversees this project as part of its role managing roadways across Virginia. VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels throughout the state to support transportation needs. The agency manages one of the largest state highway systems in the United States and provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511.
