The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the temporary closure of Route 644, also known as Rock Hill Church Road, in Stafford County. This closure is necessary to conduct maintenance work on a temporary, single-lane bridge over Aquia Creek.
The road will be closed from Monday, June 16, until late Thursday, June 19, depending on weather conditions. During this period, drivers will need to follow a detour using Route 610 (Garrisonville Road), Route 643 (Joshua Road), and Route 627 (Mountainview Road). VDOT will place message boards in advance to inform motorists about the upcoming closure.
According to VDOT’s traffic count, approximately 2,000 vehicles travel daily on Rock Hill Church Road.
Looking ahead, VDOT plans to replace the existing bridge with a new two-lane structure. The construction project is scheduled for advertisement in December 2025 and is expected to begin in 2026. The project carries an estimated cost of $6.5 million. During the bridge replacement construction in 2026, Rock Hill Church Road will again be closed between Dunbar Drive and Van Horn Lane with the same detour routes in place.
A temporary bridge was installed in fall 2020 after inspections revealed significant deterioration in the major elements of the previous structure. This measure has allowed continued use of the road while planning and funding for the new bridge were secured.
