A Roanoke man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for robbing two Truist Bank locations in October 2022. Michael Anthony McCoy, 67, pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon and one count of bank robbery.
Dawn Davis, a second defendant involved in the case, previously pleaded guilty and received a two-year federal prison sentence for her role in one of the robberies.
Court documents state that McCoy instructed Davis to write a threatening note for use during a bank robbery. On October 26, 2022, after Davis wrote the note as directed, McCoy entered the Truist Bank on Melrose Avenue NW in Roanoke and handed the note to a teller. He then approached another teller and displayed a firearm.
McCoy stole about $6,485 from this location. Two days later, he robbed another Truist Bank on McClanahan Street SW and took nearly $6,000.
Acting United States Attorney Robert N. Tracci and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced the sentencing. “The FBI and the City of Roanoke Police Department are investigating the case.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Scheff and Special Assistant United States Attorney John Beamer, who is also an Assistant Attorney General with Virginia’s Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section, are prosecuting.
