A Roanoke man, Michael Anthony McCoy, 67, has pled guilty to federal charges related to the robbery of two Truist Bank locations in October 2022. McCoy admitted guilt to one count of bank robbery with the use of a dangerous weapon and another count of bank robbery.
The case involves a second defendant, Dawn Davis, who had previously pled guilty and is awaiting sentencing later this year. According to court documents, McCoy instructed Davis to write a threatening note for use in the robbery. On October 26, 2022, McCoy entered a Truist Bank on Melrose Avenue NW in Roanoke and handed the note to a teller before brandishing a firearm at another teller. He stole approximately $6,485 from this location.
Two days after the first incident, McCoy robbed another Truist Bank on McClanahan Street SW, taking nearly $6,000.
The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee; Stephen Farina, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division; and Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares.
The investigation is being conducted by the FBI and the City of Roanoke Police Department. The prosecution team includes Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Scheff and Special Assistant United States Attorney John Beamer from Virginia’s Major Crimes and Emerging Threats Section.
