Jack McCaffery, a 6-foot-9 forward from Iowa City, Iowa, will join the Richmond Spiders men’s basketball team for the upcoming season, according to an April 21 announcement.
McCaffery is transferring from Butler University, where he played during the 2025-26 season. His time at Butler was cut short after appearing in nine games due to illness. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game before his season ended prematurely. The team expects him to receive a medical redshirt and retain four seasons of eligibility.
Before college, McCaffery had a notable high school career at Iowa City West High School. He was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year for Iowa in the 2024-25 season after averaging over 21 points per game along with significant contributions in rebounds and assists. ESPN rated him as the No. 89 player nationally in his class and he was recognized as a consensus four-star recruit.
McCaffery comes from a family with deep basketball ties. His father Fran is currently head coach of Penn men’s basketball and has led several Division I programs over three decades. His mother Margaret was an All-American player at Notre Dame, while his siblings Connor and Patrick have also played college basketball—Connor with a record number of appearances at Iowa and Patrick scoring more than 1,400 points across six seasons at both Iowa and Butler.
With this addition, McCaffery becomes the third member of Richmond’s incoming transfer class for next season alongside Jamie Kaiser Jr. and Amon Dörries.
