The University of Richmond men’s tennis team secured a 4-2 win over Fordham on April 18 at the Westhampton Tennis Complex, concluding their regular season. With this victory, Richmond improved its spring record to 13-8 and finished Atlantic 10 play with a 2-2 mark, while Fordham dropped to 8-14.
The result is significant as it gives the Spiders momentum heading into postseason play and reflects strong performances in both singles and doubles matches during the closing stretch of their schedule.
Richmond claimed an early lead by winning the doubles point. Charlie Burdell and Grant Cohen won their match on court three with a score of 6-3, followed by Cole Brashear and Davis Wiley clinching the top spot with a tight 7-5 win. The No. 2 pairing of Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner was trailing when their match was left unfinished.
In singles competition, Brashear delivered a dominant performance on court six, defeating his opponent decisively at 6-2, 6-0 to extend Richmond’s advantage. Fordham responded with wins from Filip Horak over Dylan Atkinson (6-4, 6-4) and Mateusz Gradzki over Wiley (7-5, 6-3), tying the overall score at two apiece. Pritchard then regained the lead for Richmond by securing his match in straight sets (6-2, 7-6), before Otto Sewell clinched victory for the Spiders with a hard-fought win (7-6 [7-3], 6-2) on court five.
Several matches were left unfinished as Richmond sealed its fourth point; notably Burdell led in his second set when play concluded. Updated individual records show Wiley leading singles victories at 14 wins this spring season while Brashear/Wiley posted an impressive doubles record of fourteen wins against four losses.
Looking ahead, Richmond’s performance positions them well for upcoming conference tournaments as they build upon their successes from this regular season.
