Richmond defeated James Madison University, 10-2, on April 14 at Veterans Memorial Park in a non-conference baseball matchup.

The game saw Richmond hit six home runs, while the Dukes managed two runs. The loss brings James Madison’s record to 16-19 and improves Richmond’s to 20-16.

Freshman Keegan Haesler led the Dukes offensively, going 1-for-3 with a walk and driving in both of the team’s runs. He was one of five JMU players to record a hit during the contest. In the first inning, Haesler hit a two-run single after teammates Reece Moody and Ike Schmidly advanced into scoring position.

Richmond built an early lead with three runs in the first inning and added three more solo home runs in the second. Additional scoring came from a single following an error in the fourth inning, another home run for two runs in the fifth, and two doubles that produced another run in the eighth.

Despite the loss, JMU recorded six stolen bases during the game, bringing their season total to 113—the fifth most for any season at JMU. Clay Thompson’s hitting streak ended at 13 games but he extended his streak of reaching base to 14 games with a walk. Reece Moody stole four bases to set a new career high and tie both Chad Carroll (2015) and Billy Sample (1976) for ninth place on JMU’s single-season list with 27 steals. The defeat marks three consecutive losses by JMU against Richmond for the first time since 2006-07.

James Madison will next host Appalachian State at Veterans Memorial Park for a three-game series beginning March 17.
