The Restoration of America Foundation has published an article titled “Abigail Spanberger’s View of Abortion Is Sick and Gruesome,” alleging that the former congresswoman supports late-term abortion and the elimination of parental consent, according to a news release.
According to the foundation’s article, the Virginia legislature passed a constitutional amendment in 2025 that would allow abortions through birth if approved again in 2026 and ratified by voters. The commentary criticizes Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger for endorsing the measure, arguing it eliminates parental consent and allows late-term abortions even when the fetus is viable. The piece frames the debate within Virginia’s broader political struggle over reproductive rights.
As cited by the foundation, its analysis of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and public health data from 2017–2023 found that roughly 11% of women who took the abortion pill mifepristone experienced adverse health effects, ranging from sepsis to ruptured ectopic pregnancies and, in rare cases, death. The foundation claims the FDA underreports these outcomes and calls for stricter oversight of chemical abortions. Independent medical reviews by The New England Journal of Medicine and The Guttmacher Institute report significantly lower complication rates, highlighting ongoing disputes over the data’s interpretation.
According to The Washington Post, the proposed Virginia constitutional amendment that Spanberger supports would codify reproductive autonomy, allowing abortion until fetal viability and preserving broad medical exceptions thereafter. The amendment, backed by pro-choice organizations such as Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, passed the General Assembly in 2025 and must pass again in 2026 before appearing on the ballot. Opponents, including the Restoration of America Foundation, argue that the measure would nullify all practical limits on abortion in the state.
